Dropbox

A free Dropbox account provides a secure offsite backup for items that would be expensive or impossible to replace, and it is a great way to share documents or photos with relatives or friends. My article Natural Disasters and Family History (opens in a new window) illustrates why you should store backup copies offsite.

With Dropbox you can synchronise files between your computer, tablet, smartphone and the Internet. You can also choose which files you share with whom.

When clients use my copying services for historical documents, I sometimes email a single image, but if there are multiple images I generally use Dropbox.

When document images are ready, I email you a link to my Dropbox. The 'download' button then lets you choose (1) 'Download' to your device, or (2) 'Save to Dropbox'. Many people prefer the latter because it provides a backup copy. To create a free Dropbox account:

  1. Go to Dropbox and create a free account.
  2. Download the FREE version of Dropbox (there's also a business version available).
  3. Install it on your computer, tablet or smartphone.
  4. After you download the document images I've put in Dropbox, email me and say 'Data downloaded'.
