Purpose and objectives of the Central Register
To prevent duplication of effort, it is essential to have one central point where people list their indexing projects. Records for one State may be indexed by someone living in another, so a single national register of indexes is desirable. For 17 years I maintained such a register for the whole of Australia, without any assistance or sponsorship. Such a massive project became too difficult to manage on my own, so I had to abandon the Central Register - but its publications are still in demand (Specialist Indexes in Australia: a Genealogist's Guide, 1998 edition and 2006 Supplement).
