Genealogy is my business (not just a hobby), so I charge fees for my time, regardless of the result. I've spent over 35 years learning about (and indexing) original records, and it takes time/money to consult my index, travel to a record office in Brisbane, find the relevant bundle/volume and file/page, take digital photos, and send you a report.

If you want me to inspect or copy original documents, the cost will depend on what records are available, and the handling time.

  • If you know (eg, from a death certificate) that the person was in an asylum but you don't have copies of asylum records, the minimum deposit is $65 per person (any surplus is refundable). Print the 'Asylum' request form (PDF; opens in a new window) and send it by post (not email). See the list of payment methods available.

  • If you already have copies of some records but want to check whether I have access to others, the minimum deposit is $22 per person (any surplus is refundable). Print the 'Check records' request form (PDF; opens in a new window) and send it by post (not email). See the list of payment methods available.

  • If you're not sure whether the person was in an asylum, the minimum deposit is $22 per person. Print the 'Check records' request form (PDF; opens in a new window) and send it by post (not email). See the list of payment methods available.

  • If you just want information about the types of records that I indexed, read 'Researching Mental Asylum Patients' (one of my genealogy mini-guides).
