Historical Records of Insanity and Unsound Mind
Checking, Research and Copying Services

If you want information, the cost depends on what records are available, and the handling time. If there are multiple entries for a name, there may be multiple people with the same name, or multiple documents (each with different information) for one person. Some records have just one page; others have hundreds of pages. To avoid wasting money on copies that aren't relevant, choose one of the options below.

I cannot do anything until you send a request and payment for one of these options. I've spent almost 40 years learning about, and indexing, original records. Genealogy is my business, so I charge fees for my time, regardless of the result. It takes time to read and reply to emails, consult my index and source notes, and, if applicable, travel to a record office in Brisbane, find the relevant bundle/volume and file/page, obtain copies, and send them.

Option name: Insanity INDEX: Record series & Quote.
Cost: $5 for one entry on my 'insanity' webpages, plus $2 for each additional entry (same name or different names, up to a maximum of 10 entries per day).
For each entry, you'll receive:

How to send a request (only for names listed on my 'insanity' webpages):
  1. Calculate the cost ($5 for one, plus $2 each for extras).
  2. Send payment as explained here (opens in a new window).
  3. In an email, type 'Insanity Index: Record Series and Quote', and...
  4. List the entries (10 maximum per day; just names, and Archives ID/location numbers for any documents you already have - don't send other info), and...
  5. In your email, tell me the payment date, amount and method, and (if available) your alternative email address.
  6. Send the email to the address shown on the payment page.

Option name: Insanity Records: Check Identity.

To find out whether the person you're researching is the one listed in the Insanity and Unsound Mind Index, use an Insanity *INDEX* service described above. If the results show that the record cannot be relevant (eg, wrong time period), or that you already have it, you won't waste money on unnecessary research.

Option name: Insanity Records: Other Research.

If you want me to search for records of an asylum patient whose name is *not* on the A to Z pages (links below):

  1. Note that you pay for my time, regardless of the results.
  2. Send $20 minimum as explained here (opens in a new window).
  3. In an email, type 'Insanity: Other Research', and...
  4. Patient's name and dates of birth, marriage and death; what year he/she was in an asylum (if known); spouse's name; and Archives ID/location numbers for any documents you already have.
  5. In your email, tell me the payment date, amount and method, and (if available) your alternative email address.
  6. The cost of research/copying depends on handling time, file size, etc. If your deposit won't cover everything, I'll send results up to the value of your deposit, and a quote for the remainder. To avoid delays, you can, if you wish, authorise extra expenditure up to a limit that you specify.
  7. Send the email to the address shown on the payment page.
