Old Age Pension applicants (born worldwide) living in Queensland 1908-1909

This page has 'A' surnames. See surnames beginning with other letters (A-Z links). Make sure you understand what the details in a pension record actually mean (this opens in a new window).

Explanation of name lists:

Names are from five (5) volumes within four (4) separate record series. Two volumes have provision for: name; date claim was registered; country (or Australian State) of birth; alleged age; total number of years in Queensland; town or suburb of current residence; whether the application was approved or rejected; if approved, the amount of pension payable, date payment commenced, and town where paid; if rejected, the reason for rejection; and sometimes other remarks (eg, 'sent to Dunwich Benevolent Asylum'). The other 3 volumes usually have extra details (eg, marital status; exact birthdate; full residential address; spouse's name; or letters to, or about, the pensioner).
Most applicants were born in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany or Scandinavia. Some were born elsewhere including Australia.
Most were born before 1843-1844, but some were younger.
For those whose application was rejected, the stated reason may reveal unexpected personal details.
Scroll through the list. You may recognise names that were spelled incorrectly in the records.
A question mark means handwriting was difficult to decipher, and the spelling here may be wrong.
Names beginning with 'Mc' precede other 'M' surnames.
Apostrophes have been removed from names such as O'LEARY.
NOTE: If the same name is listed twice, it usually means that there are two separate records for the same person, one with details that aren't in the other.

Genealogy is my business (not just a hobby), and I've spent over 35 years learning about (and indexing) original records, so I charge fees for my time (including time taken to consult my index).

You don't pay for '(see...)' cross-references. For example, if the list said
    BLOGGS Joe
    BLOGGS Joe
    BLOGGS Joseph (see BLOGGS Joe)
then you'd request '2 x BLOGGS Joe' and pay for 2 entries (not 3, because the 3rd entry is just a cross-reference).

Option No.1: Old Age Pension INDEX: Record Series & Quote.

$2 for one entry, plus $1 for each additional entry (same name or different names). NOTE: If the same name is listed twice, it usually means that there are two separate records for the same person, one with details that aren't in the other.

What I'll tell you (from my index):

If the entry is in a digitised register, I'll say 'You can download the register (free) at [webpage link]'.
If the entry is in another source, I'll tell you the possible contents of that document and give you a no-obligation quote (usually $10 or less) for the time involved in taking a digital photo.

To send a request, follow these steps:

Calculate the cost ($2 for one entry, plus $1 each for extras).
Send payment by bank deposit or PayPal as explained here (opens in a new window).
In an email, type 'Old Age Pension INDEX: record series & quote', and...
List the entries you want. Don't send biographical details - just the names.
In your email, tell me the payment date, amount and method, and (if you have one) an alternative email address.
Send your email to the address shown on the payment page.

Option No.2: Old Age Pension records: Digital COPY.

Use the Record Series/Quote service above to check whether the entry is in a register that is available online. If it isn't, I'll give you a quote for copying.
