Historical Photos & Sketches of People
sketch example

Various series of historical records contain photographs or sketches of people. Each photo listed below is accompanied by biographical or background details, which can be very useful for family history. My index includes photos/sketches of:

  • People sought by relatives/friends.
  • People believed to have drowned or been murdered.
  • Other missing persons (some were children).
  • Wife / child deserters.
  • Deserters from ships or military service.
  • Fathers of illegitimate children.
  • Prison escapees, criminals and suspects.
  • Many other people.

Explanation of names below:

  • Most were born in the United Kingdom, Ireland, western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, USA or Canada. A few were from other countries (South Africa, Czechoslovakia etc). Some had no connection to Queensland.
  • Date range: Photos currently listed here were taken before 1949.
  • This is an ongoing project. When more names are added, I'll announce it in my email newsletter and on What's New.
  • I am indexing photos in several different record series.
  • Abbreviations:  b. = born;  'c' before a date = circa/about.
  • Scroll through the list. Some names were spelled incorrectly in the records.
  • Names beginning with 'Mc' precede other 'M' surnames.
  • If there are multiple entries for a name, investigate them all. There may be several different photos of the same person.
  • For names below, I can obtain copies of the original records (this link leads to instructions).

Names beginning with L - Z

Copying service. Allow several weeks for a reply (I am often away).

Genealogy is my business (not just a hobby), so I charge fees for my time, regardless of the result. I've spent over 35 years learning about (and indexing) original records, and it takes time/money to consult my index, travel to a record office in Brisbane, find the relevant bundle/volume and file/page, and send you the results.

Option 1:  If you want me to copy the original document, my fee (for a digital copy sent via the Internet) is $16 per entry. If the same name is listed (above) twice, that is two entries. If you have already seen a source with a photo, your request must list the record office, source title/location or ID number, date and file/page number (be very specific). To avoid duplication, it is your responsibility to fully identify the source. See how to send requests and payment (my email address is on that page).

Option 2:  I will (for a fee of $5 per SURNAME) provide source references (the record office, its location number or title for the source, the file or page number, and an approximate date) so you can do the work yourself. If you have already seen a source with a photo, your request must list the record office, source title/location or ID number, date and file/page number (be very specific). To avoid duplication, it is your responsibility to fully identify the source. See how to send requests and payment (my email address is on that page).
